Eye drops or eye medications are commonly used for various eye problems as treatment. Proper administration of eye drops is important for effective treatment. Eye medications should be used only after consulting eye doctors to avoid any side effects as eyes are most sensitive organs. 

Eye drops timing and dosage is very important especially when your eye doctor has given you eye drops for condition such as glaucoma, allergy, infection. So proper administration of eye drops ar proper timing is also important part of eye treatment.

Here are few important steps you need to follow for administering eye drops easily and effectively,

  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before using eye drops.
  • Shake eye drops bottle before using, as some of the eye medications will be in suspension form. 
  • Do not touch the dropper tip of the eye drops bottle.
  • Some of the eye medications may require removing of your contact lens if you are wearing. You can confirm with your eye doctor once.
  • Tilt your head back and look up. You can also focus on specific point in the ceiling for more ease. 
  • Use one hand to pull your lower lid of your eye, this will create a pouch or pocket for eye drops.
  • Hold the dropper tip over the eyelid pocket formed.
  • Squeeze the bottle to drop the eye drops into the eyelid pocket without letting it touch to your ear. 
  • Close your eyes for 30 seconds. (applying pressure with finger over lacrimal sac area reduces its draining to nasolacrimal duct)
  • Wipe any unabsorbed drops that flows around your eyes.
  • Wash your hands after putting eye drops.
How to use eye drops properly?

Some of the safety tips while using eye drops: 

  • Always check for the expiry date on the label before using eye drops.
  • Always follow the dose and schedule as prescribed by your eye doctor.
  • Do not use any eye medication without eye doctor’s advice.
  • Stop eye drops immediately if you notice any allergic reaction like swelling around your eyes, redness after starting eye drops. 
  • Some of the medications like glaucoma drugs needs to be used for longer period, so do not stop glaucoma drugs until your doctor advices to stop. 
  • Once eye drops bottle is opened, do not use that bottle for more than one month.
  • Keep eye drops in cooler place. Do not expose to direct sunlight.
